So who exactly is the robed figure in the X-Men: Days of Future Past post credit scene?

We see an Egyptian desert with scores of people bowing and chanting “En Sabah Nur.” As the camera gets closer, we see man standing with his arms outstretched soaking in the worship of the people.

In the background, you can see the ancient pyramids taking shape as pieces fly, seemingly telepathically, toward the partially-completed structures.

The camera spins to show the face of the man in the multi-colored robe. He has pale gray skin and blue lips. Standing in the distance on a hill behind him are four horseman.

In case you haven’t seen it, here’s the scene.

Knowing that the next film will be X-Men: Apocalypse should be the only clue you need, but this scene makes it clear. The evil Apocalypse is coming to destroy the weak everywhere.

But who is Apocalypse?

History

comics apocalypse x-menAround 5,000 years ago a nomadic tribe found an odd looking baby. They take him in, name him En Sabah Nur and teach him their philosophy – only the strong survive.

This post credit scene draws from information revealed in the Rise of Apocalypse.

He continues to grow powerful, eventually conquering Egypt after his powers are fully awakened and renaming himself Apocalypse.

The mutant gains control of technology that can continually resurrect him, making him essentially immortal.

He goes into suspended animation, while he awaits for mutants to grow more prevalent. Apocalypse believes the strongest will follow him and crush those who are weaker – humans and “inferior” mutants.

At several points, he wakes up and increases his power through new technology, before finally awakening in the modern day to unleash his plan.

Powers

He has complete control over all of the molecules in his body allowing him to change them however he would like – to transform his size, change his arms and legs into weapons or wings. Basically, anything he’d like to do with his body he can.

He is brilliant, able to regenerate, as well as control people, things and technology with his mind. Essentially, he is an god-like mutant bent on destroying anyone who seems weak.

One thing that always accompanies Apocalypse is his four horsemen, who are often X-Men he has corrupted. He has famously brought Angel, Wolverine, Gambit, Hulk and several other mutants on at various points to be one of his horsemen.

What’s next?

age-of-apocalypseThere aren’t much details on X-Men: Apocalypse other than the villain. However, the filmmakers said that it was originally going to be called X-Men: Age of Apocalypse, which is a famous storyline from the comics.

In Age of Apocalypse, Charles Xavier is killed (accidentally by his own time-traveling son) trying to protect Magneto. Seeing this, Apocalypse decides this is the perfect time to strike and conquer the world.

This new timeline becomes the Age of Apocalypse and Magneto leads several mutant teams in an attempt to defeat Apocalypse.

It seems unlikely, filmmakers will do two time-travel movies back-to-back. But however they bring the character of Apocalypse into the lives of the X-Men, it will be interesting. I’m especially excited to see who will become each of the four horsemen.

What do you think they’ll do with Apocalypse and who will be his horsemen?
