The Jesus the Logician Project: John 14:8-11

Not only did Jesus use logic to refute his enemies, He used logic to teach His friends. In the passage John 14:8-11, Jesus uses erotema by emphasizing His point in a question to Philip.

Jesus is telling His disciples of His impending crucifixion. Thomas asked Jesus “the way” to where He was going. Jesus answered Thomas that He was the Way. He also told Thomas (and the rest of the disciples) that if you know Him you know the Father and if you have seen Him you have seen Father.

Philip did not catch what Jesus was saying, so he asked Jesus, to “show [them] the Father and it is enough for [them].” (John 14:8 NASB)

Jesus responded, “Have I so long been with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” (John 14:9 NASB)

It would be easy to join in and rebuke Philip, but I find it hard since Jesus has to constantly re-teach me things and for that (and His patience) I am thankful.

This is my third submission to Evangelical Outpost’s The Jesus the Logician Project.
